The archipelago in Alor consists of two large islands, Alor and Pantar, which flank a group of small islands in the Kumbang Strait or local residents call it the beetle's mouth. This strait is located in the small Alor Village and Kepa Island. Every year in May and September there is a strange phenomenon here. For two to three days in a row the temperature of the sea water becomes cold, both day and night. Besides being rich in marine tourism, Alor also has cultural and historical tourism. The local residents of Alor Island are also very friendly.

The Alor Archipelago consists of 20 islands and 17 sub-districts. Of these, only 9 islands are inhabited: Alor, Pantar, Pura, Terewang, Ternate (not to be confused with Ternate in Maluku), Kepa, Crocodile, Kangge, and Kura. The other 11 uninhabited islands are: Sikka, Kapas, Batang, Lapang, Deer, Goat, Watu Manu, Batu Bawa, Batu Ille, Ikan Ruing, and Nubu. There are 42 registered dive sites in Alor. One of the interesting marine tourism is seeing the dugong with its handler, Pak One.

There are also cultural tours to Takpala Village, Bampalola Village, and Kopidil Village. Then the 1000 Moko Museum, hundreds of years of Quran in Alor Besar Village, Binafui Waterfall, beautiful beaches such as Maimol Beach and Welolo Beach, then island hopping to Ternate Island, Pura Island, and Kepa Island. Alor Island itself is inhabited by a number of sub-Flores ethnic groups who still preserve their traditional way of life. One of them still produces clothes from the bark known as Ka Clothes.

Alor Island is also known as the Thousand Moko Island. The Moko are small bronze drums believed to have originated in the Dong Son culture of Vietnam. However, it remains a mystery how this prehistoric Dong Son drum arrived in Alor. Local legend says that the moko was found buried in the ground. To observe unique artifacts, you can visit the Thousand Moko Museum located in the main town of Kalabahi, on Alor Island. The museum also displays a collection of different Alor hand-woven garments called Kawate.

This island also holds the oldest Qur'an (Islamic holy book) ever found in Indonesia and in Southeast Asia. The Qur'an which is estimated to be more than 800 years old is made of bark and uses natural materials for ink. May to July is considered the best time to visit Alor. However, these months are the high season or the peak of the highest visit to Alor. Homestays, hotels, and dive resorts are options to stay in Alor. You just have to adjust to your budget and needs.
