Lembata is one of the names of a group of islands in East Flores Regency that has been popular since 1965. But before it was known as Lembata, during the Dutch East Indies government, it was known on Indonesian maps as "Lomblen Island".

On June 24, 1967 an Extraordinary Working Meeting of the Committee for the Establishment of the Lembata Regency was held in Lewoleba which later confirmed the name Lembata. The inauguration of the name "Lembata" is in accordance with the history of the origin of the people from the island of "Lepanbatan", so that starting July 1, 1967, the designation for residents who were originally "Lomblen People" changed to "Lembata People".
